TOPIC 32 DEMOCRACY
WHAT IS DEMOCRACY?
This word comes from two Greek roots: demos, people, and cratos, government. It means, then, the government of the people.
Democracy considers that the most important thing is that all people have space to think and decide.
It promotes different participation mechanisms.
It also recognizes that people are diverse and have different interests, which may hinder their participation, thus offering mechanisms for reach agreements.
Democracy, in short, has to be seen as respect for nature and the right of those who will live in the future to have a viable country and planet, with a healthy environment.
BASES AND PRINCIPLES OF DEMOCRACY
Democracy is closelylinked to several fundamental principles that are based on:
Social equity, that is, not favoring one person to the detriment of another, which also implies non discrimination due to ethnic differences, gender differences, socioeconomic conditions, limitations, or physical or mental disability of people.
The search for greater social equality, where all people have the same opportunities and rights.
The effective fight against poverty and the effective guarantee of the rights of citizens.
Another basic principle is the preferential tax treatment for the elderly, the special support for children for their food, education, and recreation.
THE CHALLENGES OF DEMOCRACY
The challenges of democracy in Ecuador are historically similar to those of other countries in Latin America.
With a look at our history and our present, we can see that instability and a poor sense of institutionality have affected the validity of rights and guarantees, and have violated democracy.
The power of citizenship is to control the proper functioning of a State.
