The Confessing Church gathered in 1934 to produce the Barmen declaration. They wanted to regain power over the German church and reinforce Christian values.

Bonhoeffer places a lot of emphasis on suffering due to the time he was writing in. This may not be as relevant in today's society. His ideas are very pessimistic and focused on Jesus' sacrifice. Though, he does advocate against inequality and unfair suffering.
