Characterization
When Simon got mad at Jimmy for joking about cancer, he slammed on the brakes
Sherman Alexie characterizes Simon as someone who is serious and cares for others. He slammed on the brakes to yell and Jimmy because Jimmy was joking about cancer.
Jimmy says to pin his X-rays to his chest and point out the tumors. He's such a dedicated baseball fan!
Jimmy has a very sarcastic personality and throughout the short story, he uses humour wherever he can. In this specific passage, he talks about pinning his X-rays to his chest and pointing out his baseball-like tumor.
Humour
When Jimmy jokes about having a ton of cancer everywhere inside of him, his friend Simon slams on the brakes and tells him that cancer isn't something to joke about.
Jimmy thinks of his cancer as something funny to laugh about throughout the entire short story. This causes him to slowly seperate from his wife and his friend, Simon. He tries to make himself feel better by joking about his tumors but in reality, it's worsening his social life.
Jimmy jokingly wants his wife and friends to call him Babe Ruth, Roger Maris or Hank Aaron.
Jimmy's favourite tumor was the size of a baseball, had the same shape of a baseball and even had stitch marks. The names that Jimmy wants to be called are names of famous baseball players. This is why he sarcasticly wants his wife and friends to call him Babe Ruth, Roger Maris or Hank Aaron.
