  • Positive sentences => popular
  • Negations & Questions: informal
    Ex: There were a lot of people at the reception.

MANY + P.C, MUCH + U

  • Normally used in Negations and Questions. Ex: Are there many boxes?
  • In positive sentences, only used after HOW, SO, TOO (formal)
    Ex: He didn't realize how much food he had eaten.
  • A number of (=a lot of) +PC + plural verbs
    • Có thể thêm considerable/ large/ huge trước number để tăng độ nhiều trong writing
  • The number of (con số, số lượng) + PC + singular verbs
  • An amount of (nhiều ko đếm được) + U + singular verbs

A FEW (some, a small number - có mà ít) + PC
FEW (not many, almost none - hầu như ko có) + PC (rather formal)

A LITTLE (some, a small amount - có 1 chút xíu) + U
LITTLE (not much, almost none - coi như ko có gì) + U (rather formal)

Ex: She has a little flour left so she'll make a a few cake
Few people are allowed to meet the Queen.
She just had so little money that she could not buy anything to eat.
Very few/little, only a few/a little => more usual

  • Some + SC/PC/U
    Normally in positive sentences. Ex: She asked for some help.
    In question to make offers/ requests/ when expect a YES answer
    Ex: Would you like some tea?
  • Any + SC/PC/U
    Normally in negations & questions. Ex: Is there any milk?
    In positive sentences "It doesn't matter who/what/where"
    Ex: Take any photo you like
    ❗ Is there any tree in that area? => existence, appearance
    Are there any trees in that area? => How many trees

Other

Every/ Each + SC, singular verbs
Ex: Every/Each candidate has to complete a form

No/Not Any + SC/PC/U
Ex: There's no news from him

Both+ PC: 2 ppl/things, positive, plural verbs (>< neither, not either)
Ex: Both Nie and Billy are students

All + PC: more than 2 ppl/things, positive, plural verbs (>< none) (ALL + U)
Ex: The sun was shining all day.

  • None: more than 2 ppl/things, negative, NO noun following (>< all)
    Ex: Are there any cake left? - No, none.
  • None of + N (S or P✅)/ O Personal Pron, singular/plural verbs
    Ex: None of the four boys/ them know(s) the answer.
  • Either + SC: any of the two, singular verbs
    (1 trong 2 cái nào cũng được)
    Ex: Either plan is fine with me.
  • Neither + SC: not one and not the other, singular verbs
    (>< both) (1 trong 2, cái nào cũng ko đc)
    Ex: Neither student is right = Either student is not right
  • Either of/ Neither of + N (phải là Plural): singular/plural verbs
    Ex: Neither of the students is/are right = Either of the students is not right

  • Both...and...: N ít hay nhiều đều đc nhưng V luôn nhiều # chỉ có Both
  • Either...or... / Neither...nor...: V tùy theo N phía sau.
    -Not only...but also: V tùy N sau.
    Ex: Not only my mom but also my siblings are at home today.

Other Structures

  • The Other(s) = the rest
  • Others = several more apart from the ones already mentioned
  • The other one(s): not this/these but sth else
  • Another: one more apart from those already mentioned
  • each other = alternate. Ex: I clean the house every other day.
  • The other day = a few days ago. Ex: I saw Biryu in the park the other day.
