Places where designers can jump in
Raw materials
Take into consideration what materials are being used to make it
Get rid of any materials that are unnecessary
Less is best, a small number of different materials is best
Redesign by getting rid of some materials
Consider where these materials are coming from
Are they non-renewable and will eventually run out or are they in great supply?
Production
Consider what energy the factories making these are using
Renewable energy sources like wind and solar are more favorable to fossil fuels
Reduces carbon footprint and global warming affects
Are the people working to make this well-paid and are they treated well ethically?
By ensuring this the social side of the product, system, or environment will be improved
The money needed to manufacture the design is reduced as much as possible for the economical interest of the company
Use
The design should be useful to the consumer in its functionality
Ideally for the task the design will have a second life
The design will be able to be used for something else afterwards, for example something around the house?
Design should be sold for a sensible amount to ensure that the design is bought by customers for a long time and not for a short period of time
This will also determine the profit that the company gets from the design (ensure economic growth)
Ensure the design is aesthetic to draw the attention of consumers
Waste
Opportunity to change a lot of this waste into recyclable materials
Reduces amounts going to landfill
If the design is given a second life than this waste step can be avoided
