LITERARY CONTEXT
a morality play is a medieval play form in which the central character-(often with a a name like 'everyman' or 'mankind')- is tempted, succumbs to temptation, is forgiven and is then saved
it was not a realistic type of drama; it was a didactic one
Shakespeare would have grown up seeing these types of plays
the harrowing of hell- connection between medieval and morality plays
hell is a castle guarded by Rybald, Christ goes to hell to get back the good souls imprisoned there
in Macbeth- Macduff is christ (knocks on the castle door and saves the good people-of Scotland)
Macbeth is therefore the devil
explicit temptation in the form of witches and lady Macbeth
his own thoughts are also his sins
connection between medieval and morality plays
Macbeth never repents nor does he salvate
