Poverty in Latin America
POVERTY
Poverty, therefore, is a limitation for freedom and for the full expansion of people's capacities.
Extreme poverty or homelessness exists when the income of a person or a household is not enough to cover the cost of a basic food basket.
POVERTY IN LATIN AMERICA
Children are more affected by poverty than adults. This is because poor families are more numerous. Education is a factor closely related to poverty.
Poverty also affects women more than men, especially in cities. Poverty in Latin America and the Caribbean has an important ethnic component.
The countries with the highest incidence of poverty on the continent are Honduras, Guatemala, Venezuela, Mexico, and Nicaragua according to the data presented in 2017. In addition to entire regions within the richest countries, they also present poverty.
CAUSES OF POVERTY
Those born poor are less likely to study. When there are natural disasters, the poor are the most affected.
Faced with all the disadvantages put together, the poor's inventiveness, flexibility, and tenacity is the only thing that explains their survival.
INCREASE IN DIFFERENCES
The growing global concentration of production and knowledge in a handful of countries has led to increasing inequalities.
THE ORGANIZED POOR
Poverty is not eliminated by decree or only with goodwill. It is necessary for the poor to organize themselves to face their situation and implement options for political participation to influence the decisions of the State.
The next step is to apply long-term, sustainable public policies that guarantee employment and services.
