Our social commitment includes time to study, time to work, and productive activities. Another to eat and rest. And there is also free time. The use of free time is another requirement that we need not only as human beings but also as members of an organized society. The realization of playful and pleasant activities allows each individual to develop fully and form social bonds with others in their free time. It also allows our body and mind to refresh and gather energy to face work and study.
Advances in information technology (especially the Internet) and entertainment culture affect the recreation of young people in cities. Certain musical rhythms, preferences for movie stars and athletes primarily define youth identity. Around these interests, groups of young people that strengthen cities, regions and countries who share the same tastes, games, hobbies and fun are formed. The use of free time among young people varies. In the city, young people spend their free time visiting cinemas, discos, etc.
Our leisure activities are not the same. They change according to our interests and tastes and over time. However, you can point out some deviations that are shared equally between different segments of the population, for example, likes for sports or likes for teams. In the case of soccer, going to the stadium on the weekend or watching a soccer game on television is an activity with friends and family. Or, also in the past, it was common to go for a walk outside the city or go to a park on weekends to walk or play sports. Especially in the cities of our country, the middle class and popular families go to the mall on weekends to buy things or just have fun and go for a walk.
Another factor is the popular festivals, which are characteristic elements of national, regional and regional identities. The whole community joins parties such as Old Year or Carnival. The patron saint festivities are very important. They are also very important to the popular Afro-Ecuadorian mestizo, keeping alive the traditional religious festivals, where Catholic festivals meet a variety of activities in the city center.
Until recently, it was common for children to play outside with their friends at school and on the street. Games like hopscotch or spinning tops, jumping rope, and marbles were very common. Some of them still work, but they are being replaced by new forms of entertainment such as television and video games.
There is one element that characterizes all Andean societies, and hence ours: reciprocity. Ecuadorians love to spend time together to strengthen bonds of community, family and friendship. Having fun together or having other people share our recreations is a fundamental part of our identity.
Even adults in our country have fun and reproduce themselves with some peculiarities. In cities, it is very common to play gymnastics, jogging, running in the morning, and volleyball, basketball and soccer on the weekends.
