The media (mainly television, press, radio, and internet) are instruments through which messages reach us. They can serve to foster communication in society as a whole and promote social and cultural values, or to distort, manipulate or try to standardize our criteria. In our country, most newspapers, television channels and radios belong to private companies or people. Other belong to indigenous communities. The media is also owned by religious institutions.
The Ecuadorian State maintains public media. In addition, to the traditional National Radio, there is a TV channel, a radio and a newspaper. Although television channels and radios have private owners, the frequency on which these media operate (known as radio space) belong to the state and cannot be sold. The State grants wavebands to channels and radios so that they can operate.
