Native Americans
Roosevelt reversed the assimilation but he said that native Americans had to act in a constitutional way.
ISSUES tribal homelands- When native Americans were relocated they signed a treaty where they were given land and money. However, in the 1960s they thought these terms were unfair. Many native Americans wanted new treaties.
SELF DETERMINATION- The BIA tried to damage tribes and make them dress.
However, Native Americans wanted to keep customs. This made them have haircuts and speak English.
President Nixon sympathised with Native Americans as he believed that it was more likely to make a positive change on 830,000 Native Americans compared to 22 million African Americans.
Nixon - 1972 Indian Education Act
