The lack of proper sanitation facilities in public schools is an issue arising from our country's history, this issue places an emphasis on inequality amongst public and private schools and its impact on dignity.
The majority of learners in SA attend public schools and improper sanitation facilities harms these learners both emotionally and physically.
This research paper will focus on how improper sanitation facilities in public schools impedes learners' right to dignity.

Improper sanitation facilities also take away the rights to privacy and a safe environment. Learners have to find other means to relieve themselves, i.e. outside school property or in unsafe pit latrines. Female students sometimes suffer the most in these situations due to menstruation.
The circumstances bring harm to their health and emotional well-being, thereby hampering their dignity.

6.Challenges
Government might have passed several policies relating to fixing the issues of sanitation facilities in public schools but not much is being done to improve the situation on the ground. Many public schools still do not have proper sanitation facilities. Money that was injected into proper sanitation projects might have been laundered by corrupt officials, whilst learners' dignity is suffering.
Cases must be incorporated with each idea. Cases relating to Komape and Mkhethwa (children who died due to unsafe pit latrines) can be used. In S v Makwanyane - the court made a decision relating to human dignity. What does the Schools Act 84 of 1996 say about sanitation facilities? The Constitution - How ss 7, 10, 24, 28 and 29 emphasize human dignity and the factors relating to education, the best interests of learners (children) and how a safe environment must be created especially proper sanitation facilities.
Briefly summarize key factors mentioned. Everyone is entitled to the right to dignity and having their right to dignity protected as per the Constitutional values. Lack of proper sanitation facilities in public schools impedes on learners' right to to dignity. A lack of privacy and safety causes harm and health concerns. An infringement of learners' dignity subsequently diminishes educational growth and development.
