Explorers, or boys messing about? Either way, the taxpayer gets the rescue bill
Summery
The text is adapted from an article by Stephen Morris first published in the Gaurdian in January 2003. It recounts the story of two highly inexperienced professionals who crashed a helicopter into an area totally unsuitable for both that sort of aircraft and inexperienced explorers (Antarctica) and the the considerable amount of money their rescue cost the taxpayer
Structure & Style
Although it was published in a newspaper, this article is clearly not impartial and strongly believes that the men were in the wrong
The use of short paragraphs breaks up the monotony of the long, embedded sentances meaning that the piece reatains a fast pace
Lots of facts and information, typical of an article
-
Quotation Analysis
Experts questioned the wisdom of taking a small helicopter - the four-seater Robinsion R44 has a single engine - into such a hostile enviroment
The author contrasts 'experts' against the men, showing a prejudice. Thinkng that the men were inexperienced

-
'But Mrs Vetsey claimed she did not know what the pair were up to, describing them as "two boys messing about with a helicopter"
'Claimed' conveys uncertainty, seeding doubt in the reader's mind
'Boys messing about' refers back to the title and insults the men, saying that they were both 'boys'. However it also inspires a certain sympathy as traditionally 'boys' do things sometimes that they shouldnt but it's more silliness than actual maliciousness

Key Themes
-
Maturity
The maturity of the men and wether that should impact the amount of responsibilty they deserve is reflected a lot in this passage. The harsh qouting of Mr Brooks' wide saying 'emergency people' instead of acknowledging the people and servics who effectively saved her husbands life suggests that the article is intentionally trying to make the men feel embarresed.

-
Adventure
The theme of adventure is perceived differently in this article, depending on who is talking about it. The men think that they were on a mission that they were prepared for whereas the newspaper views them as 'boys messsing about'. Mr Brooks is particularly highlighted as one of the 'boys' with his previous sucess appearing ironic in his current failure
