What is cancer
-
-
Drivers of cancer
Proto-oncogenes - involved in normal cell growth and division, they become altered or more active than normal and many become cancer causing genes (oncogenes)
Tumour suppressor genes - involved in controlling cell growth and division, when they are altered cells may divide in an uncontrollable manner
DNA repair genes - involved in fixing damaged DNA, mutations in these genes can go on to mutate other genese
-
Types of cancer, cancer staging and tumour grades
There are over 100 types of cancer, usually named for the organs or tissue the cancer is from but may be described as the cell that formed them
-
Cancer staging
Primary Tumour (T)
-
-
T1,2,3,4 - the higher the number the larger the tumour or the more it has grown into nearby tissues
Regional lymph nodes (N)
-
-
N1, 2, 3 - The higher the number the more lymph nodes that contain cancer
