DEMOCRACY AS THE BASIS OF SOCIAL LIFE
Conditions for Democracy
Achieved with long processes in which the people claim the right to govern themselves.
Form of government in which the authority is chosen by the citizens to ensure their interests and needs.
Much more than choosing and voting.
Must meet the needs of all people, especially the poorest.
Democratic Values
FREEDOM: It is the ability to decide and act according to how you think or feel, but without harming other people.
EQUALITY: It is treating others in the same way, recognizing their differences.
EQUITY: It is not feeling superior or inferior, but recognizing our particular needs.
SOLIDARITY: It is to stop thinking only of ourselves and act in community, assuming the problems of others as if they were our own.
Democracy in our daily life
Democracy is not only a form of government but also a way of life. In all possible spaces, we must exercise democratic values and make decisions to take responsibility for our community.
Living democratically is a complex task that implies respecting the ideas of others and recognizing that we will not always achieve a total agreement and that the disagreement is not negative. It requires the ability to listen, yield and accept commitments.
Integral Democracy
The existence of democracy is identified with the validity of a Constitution and a legal order or with the holding of elections.
Democracy not only implies political rights but also equity and social justice. In addition to the existence of guarantees or elections, conditions of socioeconomic equality must also be possible.
Equality must also be given to the situation of the various components of society.
Democracy is also respect for nature and the right of those who will live in the future to have a country and a road planet, with a healthy environment.
