41 countries experienced water shortages in 2011; In 10 of them, renewable clean water resources are about to be exhausted and they have to use alternative sources. These trends are getting worse due to increased drought and desertification. By 2050, it is estimated that at least one in four people will be affected by frequent water shortages.
To ensure everyone has safe and accessible drinking water by 2030, we must invest in infrastructure, build sanitary facilities and promote hygiene at all levels. If we want to alleviate water scarcity, we must protect and restore water-related ecosystems such as forests, mountains, wetlands and rivers. In addition, international cooperation is needed to promote water efficiency and support treatment technologies in developing countries.
