Formative assessments help teachers plan their lessons according to the class trends on the formative assessments. It also is a tool for students to have a better understanding of what they need to focus on in the materials.

Assessements of Learning
These types of assessments are usually done at the end of a unit or semester or year to assess the amount of information the student retained from the class.
Assessments of learning are often the formal tests teachers administer where students receive a grade and feedback on their performance.

These types of assessments are done during the learning process to check for understanding and give the teacher an idea of what to focus on more in the materials.

Assessments as Learning
These assessments give students the opportunity to assess themselves and self-reflect on their own learning. They can also be used for peer assessment. This way, students can monitor their own progress or their peers' progress and clearly see what they know and can do with their current knowledge.

Diagnostic Assessments
Diagnostic assessments are pre-tests. With diagnostic assessments the teacher is able to gather the information they need in order to understand the students knowledge and engage the whole classroom. They can hep a teacher to benchmark the students progress and the teacher may consider whether to give an assessment at the end of the unit so that the students are able to see how far they have come with their development.

Performance Assessments
Performance assessments are also known as "authentic" or "alternative" assessments. Students have to perform certain tasks instead of choosing answers from a provided list. These are used to assess student's progress and may be a better indicator of what the student knows since students have to produce something with all that they've learned (synthesizing information).

Summative assessments are an assessment of learning and are used to measure student progress throughout an entire unit.
