Techniques
Simile and Metaphor: When Rat says “I felt like I was up on a ship” the word "ship" is a metaphor for the boat he wishes to buy but the choice of the word ship shows us that now he doesn't wish to go alone but to have his friends with him too.
Personification: When Rat says “the dumpsite was alive now,” It personified the dumpsite as the wind blew through it making it look as if it were alive.
Pathetic Fallacy: Rat describes the storm as harsh words like “whirling” and “blowing” and the money as “spilling” which are a direct reference to the violent social change that is happening, the money going back to the poor and being taken from the rich.
Pathetic Fallacy - The way Rat describes the sky as “light” represents the end of the corrupt regime in Belhala because it contrasts the way he usually described the sky as “dark” when corruption was at its hight.
Rat
Compassionate: This is shown when Rat says “We should take it to Belhala and put it in the trash for anyone who finds it” He wants to bring back the money stolen by Zapanta and bring it to the people of Belhala, even though those people mistreated and bullied him.
Smart: pg 196 While Rat, Raphael, and Gardo are running away from the police they meet a gang of trash boys. Rat realizes that their best chance of getting away from the police is with the boys as there is safety in numbers.
Changed - As an introduction to chapter five Rat says “Jun - no longer Rat. My name is Jun - Jun.” The name change shows us that Rat is now filled with confidence and self-worth and is no longer like the Rat-like boy that Raphael described at the start of the book because he now has friends and has people to depend on other than himself.
Theme
The quote “It would be taken away - you think we stood a chance of keeping even a million?” This is an example of corruption because even if they find the money Zapanta stole they wouldn't be able to keep it, it would just be taken back off of them again which is an example of the corruption in Belhala.
They say “money from hell” because even though they are giving it to the poor, it was stolen money by Zapanta who stole it from the poor, which is an example of corruption but it also shows us that initial corruption sometimes makes later corruption acceptable.
When the boys stop off for Pia, Rat says “I had to carry her on my back.” This shows how poor she is in society because Rat could lift her and at the start of the book Rat is described as thin limbed and small and him being able to carry her tells us just how small Pia is, which is another example of corruption and poverty.
Raphael
Frightened - Rat tells us about Raphael “lingering” wanting to say goodbye to his family, which shows us that Raphael fears never seeing them again it also shows fear because if Raphael did stay he might get arrested again and this time never gets out.
Naive - The word choice “lingered” also shows us how naive Raphael is for wanting to stay, for thinking that he could stay but he has no choice but goes unless he wants to get himself or his friends caught.
Relationship
Changed - At the start of the chapter Rat tells us that Raphael has told the first part of the story and that they both agreed that they work better as a team. This shows us that their relationship has changed from being Raphael as the powerful one with Rat as lesser to them both being equal as they now cooperate and work together as a team, as friends.
Changed - When Rat explains how he and Raphael reacted when throwing away the money “We held each other and howled.” shows the change in their relationship because before Rat was quiet and timid and Raphael was the boss and them both holding on to each other and both using their voices is another example of how they are have changed and are now equal.
