Cataract
Definition
An eye disease common in individuals over the age of 60 years.
It when vision becomess blurry, foghy and cloudy this disease can be treated by yhe doctor
Signs and Symptoms
Vision that is cloudy, blurry, foghy and filmly
Changes in yhe way you see colour
Proboems with glare during the day
Double vision on the affected eye
Trouble wirh eye glassess or contact lemses not working well ( Lewis medically surgical nursing textbook edition 9)
Types Of Cataracts
Nuclear:
Also known as Sclerotic cataract
Seen mostly by doctors when their patients come through when they have eye problems
Anyone who lives longer ends up with this type of cataract
It forms in the center of the lens
The lens gardness and turns yellowish and brown in colour (ask doctorozz.co.za)
Infected person has a hard yimr seeing small detailed things and colour gets less rich.
Cortical Cataract
Found putsife the edge of the lens called the cortex
They start as white edges like triabgkes that point towards the cebtr of the eye(lewis medical and surgical nursing edition 9)
As they grow they scatter light
The main symptoms is glare
Pathopsysiology
The lens is made out of water and protein fibre
Opacity occurs when the lens protein clumps together
The ability of thr lens to refract light reduces which causes reduced visual acuity (www.nurseslab.com)
Chemical modification of the lens causes it to thicken and hardness

Nurisng Diagnoses: Disturbed sensory perceptions
Which may be related to :
1) cataract
2) impaired vision acuity
3) changes in the eyes due to againg
Nursing Interventions
Provide light for patiens room to ensure lighening is adequate for patients needs
Prepare patient for cataract surgery as warranted
Encourage patient to see an ophthalmologist atleast yearly
Provide lightening fir patient to perform activities (nurses lab.co.za)
Assess the ability of the patient to see and perform activities
Causes
Expected Outcomes
Patient will regain optimal vision possible and develop a permanent visual changes
Patient will be able to verbalize understanding of optimal vision loss and disease of the eye.
Patient will be able to deal with potential or permanent vision loss
Patient will maintain a safe environment with no injury noted
Patient will regain vision ability of maximum extent with the help of surgical procedures
Cataract forms when proteins build up in the lens of the eye
