Phathophysiology
pus and blood may ooze out of the nipples
a cracked nipple can allow bacteria to enter the breast and cause an infection.
milk duct blockages causes milk to pool in the breast and inflammation.
if a blocked milk ducts is not cleared, flu-like symptoms such as fever, aches and pains may develop.
it may be result of blocked milk ducts or bacterial infection.
signs and symptoms
skin redness mostly in a wedge shape pattern.
thickening of breast tissue or breast lump
warmth to touch or breast tenderness
cracked and inflamed nipples
breast swelling
pain sensations continuously while breast feeding
Nursing diagnosis
risk for ineffective breastfeeding
acute pain related to inflammation of breast tissue as evidence by the pain in one breast.
Definition
Mastitis is an infection in the tissue of one mammary gland inside the breast
assessment
pains while breast feeding
the baby is having hard time latching on and does not empty the breast completely
one breast has hard tender, red spot on the outer area.
Nursing gaols
the increase of breast emptying within 24 hours
the increase ability of a baby latching ability within 48 hours.
the decrease of in pain and redness of one breast within 24 hours
the patient will be free from the signs and symptoms of Mastitis within 48 hours.
Nursing intervention
the nurse must demonstrate to the patient how to apply warm compresses to the breast every 2 hourly.
assist the patient with proper latching techniques with her newborn before the end of the visit.
the patient will take ibuprofen 200mg every 6 hourly for pain and inflammation.
the nurse must observe the mother breastfeeding to assess the possible latching problems.
evaluation
after 48 hours of nursing intervention, the patient must report that she is comfortable when breastfeeding there is very little or no pain. the increase of a new born latching ability and with pain scale of 3/10.
