Pathophysiology
Occurs when a disease causing microorganisms infects the tonsils
Pathogens provoke the inflammatory response of cytokines that are up regulated
Nursing care plan
Diagnosis
Swollen lymph nodes
Dry throat
Pain
Nursing intervention
Give analgesics
Give antibiotics such as penicillin and amoxicillin as prescribed
Give it corticosteroids
Encourage the patient to drink plenty of water
Encourage the patient to rest(Juta's Medical Surgical Nursing Second edition)
Goal
To stop bacterial growth and prevent infection caused by the bacteria
To reduce pharyngeal oedema
To relieve pain
To prevent dehydration and keeping the throat moist
Evaluation
Check for the normal moist throat
Patient will verbalize feeling no pain
Expected outcome
Pain relieved
Normal moist throat
no pharyngeal oedema
Clinical manifestations
Loss of appetite
Sore throat
Swollen lymph nodes
Fever
Difficulty in swallowing
