Risk factors
Skipping vaccinations. If a child hasn't completed childhood or adult vaccination schedule is at a higher risk
Age. Children younger than 5 are mostly affected with viral meningitis, bacterial meningitis affects affects people less than 20 years of age
Living in a community setting e.g children living in boarding schools are at risk of meningococcal meningitis

Pathophysiology

Inflammatory exudate increases increases intracranial pressure and the infection causes an increase in the CSF production and pressure that is measurable on lumbar puncture
The inflammatory reaction causes irritation of the cerebral tissues and may cause convulsions, the inflamed and irritated meninges cause neck stiffness
Nursing diagnosis
Acute pain related to nuchal rigidity, muscle aches, immobility and increased sensitivity to external stimuli secondary to infectious process
Acute pain related to headache, fever, neck pain secondary to meningeal irritation
