Definition
A gap/hole in the structure of the eye that may affect the eyelid, iris, retina, or optic nerve of one or both eyes

Causes

A gap called the choroid fissure present during early stages of prenatal development fails to close up fully before child is born
Clinical manifestations

Posterior colobomata affect the inferior retina, deficit in the superior visual field results

Glaucoma, nystagmus, scotoma or strabismus may occur

Embryonic fissure develops from eccentric invagination of the optic vesicle leaving a gap inferonasally
Gap allows hyaloid artery to access the inner eye and and is crucial for continued ocular development
