Diagnostic Assesment by Karla Meek : ✏

Assessment of, as, and for Learning

This is an umbrella group that other forms of assessment fall under. A teacher should ideally utilize all three in their classroom. When designing an assessment a teacher can use these categories to reflect on the greater purpose of the assessment. All forms of these assessments should be designed with a mind towards inclusivity.

Assessment of Learning

Assessment for Learning

Sometimes described as formative assessments, they should occur throughout the learning process in both formal and informal settings. These assessments help the teacher and student clarify the learning process. They should motivate the student. They have clear goals and give the student direct and actionable feedback.

Through the process of assessment as learning students develop metacognition skills. The teacher guides students through self reflection by setting goals and analyzing their achievement. Through this process the student should continue to set future goals for improvement. These skills are developed through self reflection and peer review.

Also described as summative assessments, these occur at the end of learning period and are used to provide evidence for reporting and grading purposes. They many be shared with a wider audience beyond the student such as families or other educators. Because of this public nature, care must be taken that these assessments are fair, consistent and offer a measurable demonstration of learning.

Importance of Assessment of Learning

These assessments are important for creating an overall record of student learning and achievement. These assessments may be used to determine a students future pathway such as for class placement or entrance to university. These are also helpful for teachers and administrators in assessing the successfulness of a course of curriculum and planning for future courses.

Importance of Assessment as Learning

The skills developed in these assessment strategies go beyond specific content or subject areas. These assessments help students to grow self-awareness and agency in their own learning process. They are important as a part of holistic learning and building critical thinkings skills that students will use in all areas of life in their future.

Importance of Assessment for Learning

These forms of assessment are integral for understanding what students have learned but also what students need more guidance on or exposure to. They allow a teacher to tailor further instruction for the specific needs of their students as a class and individuals. These assessments should inform the teaching plans and be used to reflect on the effectiveness of teaching strategies.

strengths

Identifies studentʻs:

weaknesses

Assessment of Learning - helps teachers identifiy learning gaps

A baseline of student learning to work from - used 1st day of class, beginning of a course/unit

Textbook pre-course test - good for a teacher who prefers to use the course textbook

Diagnostic Questionaires - quick, time saving, anonymous

Commercial diagnostics - companies that usually provide test prep. Examples: Scholastic, SAT Prep, Princeton Review

Teacher Designed Assessment - create your own; takes more work and time 9f4271c46b6f75dafb8445bbe7e5cc

Examples of diagnostic assesments:

Formative assessment
is an on-going method of evaluation -a process that helps teachers to monitor learners' progress and identify any challenges that students are facing as they learn. It includes a series of quick-fire tests that provide on-time feedback on students' performance.

Summative assessment is a traditional method of evaluation where the teacher measures the student's performance using a standardized benchmark. It is done at the end of the course or instructional unit and it focuses on the program's outcomes.

Steps to creating performance-based assessments

Students address authentic problems and will ideally mirror real world events that one might face in certain jobs.

These assessments can prepare students for life outside of school.

They are not your typical paper based test exams.

The assessment is less to test a student's ability to remember things but more for the student to analyze and create.

Serve as practice for students

Guide teacher about future lessons'needs

Provide students feedack about their performance enlightening them to what they need to work on.

Students answer open-ended questions that can be answered in many different ways

Shoot a documentary film

Students plan an event or trip

Students argue a case like they’re lawyers

Science labs: analyze blood samples

Students have a debate

Key characteristics
Complex, authentic, process/product oriented, open-ended, time bound

Students conduct an experiment

students give and oral presentation

students design a commercial/advertisement

Dramatic performance

  1. Identify goals: decide which skills the students need to use to navigate through the tasks.

  1. Select appropriate course standards: decide what aspect of their learning you are assessing.

  1. Identify where students could use real world application: review the students’ work so far and see what could be applied to authentic situations.

  1. Design the scenario: who is the audience? What is the setting? What role will the students play? How long will it take place?

  1. Gather and create materials: find or create the authentic materials for the students to use for example, write out a scenario that the students need to analyze.

  1. Develop a learning plan: what do the students need to know to complete the task? Decide what they need to be taught before completing the assessment tasks but leave room for creativity.

  1. Develop a rubric: make something for the students to refer to so they know what is expected of them but leave room for creativity.
