The Protestant Reformation
Happened in the 1500s
A man named Johann Tetzel noticed that groups of people were gathering for something he was trying to sell. He was selling something for the Catholic Church.
Tetzel was selling indulgences for the Catholic Church. Which is a pardon of sins that must be paid for. After a while, some people started to dislike the Church for valuing money over the people.
Martin Luther
A man that was part of the Catholic Church. He disagreed with their way of manipulating people for money. He didn't agree with the Church's teachings so he nailed his protest on the Church door for other people to see.
The 95 Thesis
For his protest, he wrote a thesis including 95 things that he found wrong with the Catholic Church. He Challenged the authority of the Pope. He nailed it to the Church door.
When people went to the Church they read the 95 theses and started to realise some of the things that the Church was doing

The English Reformation
16th century
King Henry VIII wanted a male heir but in order to do this he needed to remarry. But before he remarried, he needed permission from the Pope.
Pope Clement VII Refused Henry VIII request for divorce.
King Henry VIII was enraged. He declared that he should be the ultimate authority over all maters that related to the Church.
Henry VIII dissolved all of England's monasteries so he could confiscate their wealth.
He started working to put the Bible in the people's hands instead of the Church's.
Soon after, Almost every person had a copy.
He created the Anglican Church: A church that he was in charge of and made decisions for. Using this Church, He could remarry without sinning.

Scottish Reformation
John Knox
Became a protestant priest.
Two years later, he became a tutor to two sons of a politician that believed and had a strong say in Protestantism.
With his pupils, John Knox moved from place to place because many protestants and accomplices of his were being burned for heresy by the Catholic Church.
His employers sent a message stating that he was to take the pupils to St. Andrews. Which was safe at the time.
After arriving, he was persuaded to preach in town.
to summarize: He led a Protestant rebellion and soon after created the Presbyterian Church.
The Presbyterian Church was governed by multiple councils of men.
He wanted to go to Germany so he could study Protestantism.
Swiss Reformation
John Calvin
John Calvin fled France after he converted to Protestantism.
He moved to Basel, Switzerland.
Calvin agreed with the teachings of Luther.
unlike Luther, Calvin fitted in with Christians.
Calvin formed a new form of Protestantism where people would practice only what is written in the Bible.
French reformation
The Huguenots
Many French humanists became interested in the works of Martin Luther.
Many of them Left the Roman Catholic Church to practice Protestantism.
They are called the Huguenots.
Many religious wars occurred between the Huguenots and the Catholics. These wars lasted for around 40 years.
The Catholic Church supported massacre of the Huguenots.
After the wars, France granted the freedom to be Protestant in 1598.
