ACOUSTIC NEUROMA
DEFINITION
A non cancerous tumour on the main nerve
leading from the inner ear to the brain
Also known as vestibular schwannoma
NURSING CARE PLAN
Try by all means to reduce the level of noise around the patient
Assure the patient that the condition is not life threatening and is not cancerous
Give medication as prescribed
Make sure that the patient is on bed rest to prevent falling
CAUSES
Neck or face radiation may lead to it years later
Disease called neurofibromatosis type 2 patients are at risk
Constant or continuous exposure to loud noise
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
The tumor then presses on the hearing and balance nerves
in the inner ear
It grows slowly from overproduction of Schwann cells
Schwann cells normally wrap around and support nerve fibers
It is a rare non cancerous tumor
PHARMACOLOGICAL MANAGEMENT
Steroids
Intraoperative diuretics
Hyperventilation
Surgery and radiosurgery
CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS
Reduced sensation of touch
Hearing loss
Pins and needles sensation
Rapid involuntarily movement of the eye
Dizziness
Ringing in the ears
Balance disorder or unsteadiness
