MENIERE'S DISEASE
DEFINITION
Specific balance disorder of the inner ear
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
which distorts the contour of the
membranous labyrinth and destroys
production of excess endolymph,
the delicate vestibular and cochlear hair cells
The tissue changes in the labyrinth trigger
NURSING CARE PLAN
Advice patient to rest and take medication accordingly
Reassure and counsel the patient that the condition is not life threatening
Refer patients to audiologist for further assessments
Patient should avoid sudden head movements
Thorough assessments need to be done
Teach patient to seek assistance when attacks occur to prevent injury
CAUSES
Related to malabsorption of endolymph
In the membranous labyrinth

PHARMACOLOGICAL MANAGEMENT
Antiemitics drugs such as promethazine
Drugs for motion sickness like diazepam or meclizine
Sedation like clonazepam
CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS
Tinnitus
Aural fullness
Hearing loss
A feeling of being pulled to the ground
Vertigo
