pathophysiology
it occurs when child's eustachian tube becomes swollen or blocked and traps fluid in the middle ear. the trapped fluid can become infected.

pathophysiology
bacteria spread from the middle ear to the mastoid air cells, where the inflammation cause damage to the bony structure

pathophysiology
one of the bones in the middle ear, the stapes, becomes stuck in place. when this bone is unable to vibrate, sound is unable to travel through the ear and hearing becomes impaired.
nursing intervention
encourage and assist the parent to hold and comfort the patient, this promotes physical comfort and distraction for a child experiencing illness.
encourage the mother to provide and offer liquid to soft foods, because movement of the eustachian tube, such as with chewing may further aggravate the pain.
monitor child for relief of the pain and any side effects of medication, this provides information about the effectiveness of the medication and prevents untoward effects.

monitor and record vital signs closely, a nomral response to pain is an increase in the respiratory rate, heart rate, and blood pressure, fever may cause discomfort.
