Assessment of learning
What is Assessment of learning and why it is used?
Assessment of learning are assessments that teachers use as evidence of student learning to make judgements on student achievement against goals and standards. They are usually grade-based.
This kind of assessment is usually administered at the end of a unit or grading period and evaluate students' learning by comparing her/his achievement against whole class, district or nationwide benchmark or standard.
Examples of the assessment
Exams
Portfolios
Final projects
Standardized tests
Summative assessments
These assessments have a concrete grade attached to them that communicate student achievement to teachers, parents, students, school-level administrators and district leaders.
Assessment as learning
What is Assessment as learning and why is it used?
During assessment as learning, students are working as their own assessors. They monitor their own learning, ask questions and critically reflect on their learning by adopting a range of strategies to decide what they know and can do, and how to use assessment information for next step learning.
Assess what
This kind of assessment assesses students' thinking about their learning, what strategies they use to support or challenge their learning and the mechanisms that they use to adjust and advance their learning.
Examples of the assessment
1. 3-2-1 Countdown: Students are required to
respond to three separate statements:
a) 3 things you didn't know before;
b) 2 things that surprised you about this topic;
c) 1 thing you want to start doing with what
you've learned.

- Think-Pair-Share: Students are asked a question and write down their answers. They're grouped in pairs to discuss their responses, and also allowed to move around the classroom, listening to various discussions.
- 3-Way Summaries**: In response to a question or topic inquiry, they write three different summaries:
a) 10-15 words long
b) 30-50 words long
c) 75-100 words long
- Learning reflection**
Assessment for learning
What is Assessment for Learning(AFL)? Why is it used?
Assessment for learning sometimes refers to "formative assessment, and it takes place throughout the process of teaching and learning to improve students' learning and understanding.
AFL aims to close the gap between students' current learning and the goal they want to reach during their learning. It enables students to actively think about where they're are, where they're going and how to get there.
