Fashion: How does old fashion influence modern clothing trends?
The Fashion Cycle
Five stages: introduction, the rise, the peak, the decline and outdated
Intro happens when a designer introduces a new design
Rise: many people start wearing the clothes.
Trend spreads and hits it's peak
Decline: people start to get bored with the trend
Outdated: the trend is "actively disliked"
I will use this information to explain the different stages that trends go through during the fashion cycle.
Trends Repeat Every 20-30 Years
Fashion Trends Repeat Every 20-30 Years
"Researchers think that trends repeat because of generational changes"
"average amount of time it takes for a certain style to come back into fashion is around 20-30 years"
Designers take inspiration from trends and clothes their parents wore
90's and 2000's coming back in style
Fashion trends may be short because of social media
This article gives information from researches, which is helpful information for my paper
Trends Repeat Every 20-30 Years
Economic changes in society have a factor in fashion trends
Fashion trends in the 2020 decade will eventually repeat
Some trends are "classic" and others are "fads" depending on how long they last.
Using economic changes as an example in my paper can help my point to how trends rise in popularity.
Fashion (and history) repeats itself
Designers introduce a style that is worn by "fashion leaders" like celebrities. Fans start wearing it, making the trend popular. The style then gets replaced with something new
"fashion fad will only last 3 to 12 months, a trend will last 1 to 5 years, and a classic will be around for 5 to 10 years"
Money plays a big factor: if there is an "economic downturn" then people are more likely to invest in classic pieces instead of trends.
This article is useful to my paper so I can explain to the reader how money is a factor to clothing trends, how long trends last and how trends are brought into style.
Fashion Trends and Theory: History Repeating
Fashion leaders before movie stars were royalty
Technology spreads trends through social media.
Trickle down theory "states that lower classes will try and mimic the wealthy and influential by adapting their styles"
Styles will be more expensive but after a while they will be affordable for people to buy.
I can use the trickle down theory to explain how trends spread.
How The Fashion Trend Cycle Runs Like Clockwork
Cycle can be a 40, 30 or 20 year cycle
Vocativ gives readers a timeline for how long a trend comes back in style.
Fashion usually has a 20 year cycle, for example: 70's became popular in the 90's and 90's become popular in recent years.
I can use article by telling the reader how long the fashion cycle lasts and also give examples.
Fashion Cycle
Clothes become "in expensive" for consumers to buy
Intro: designs are introduced "through runway shows, season launch and special events". Celebrities and influencers also introduce these trends
Decline in popularity: "the laggards or late adopters wear this style. It's available at rock bottom prices".
Bell - Shape curve of the fashion cycle gives a time frame and how many pieces of clothing are sold in each of the five stages.
The bell - shaped curve is very useful to see how long each stage lasts and how much clothing is purchased during that time.
