Past and Present of West Quay
It was there from 1914 to 1990
The land was then cleared up for West Quay shopping centre
The whole length of West Quay used to be called the pirelli Factory Which was network of cables for southampton
Then West Quay was opened in 28th September 2000
facts in pirelli cable factory
In the 1920s, cracks began appearing in the buildings as continuing settlement resulted in drops of up to 9in and the corridors and floors contorted.
the new factory neighbours were not happy about the factory which was made because before it looked out to the new forest
the building of pirelli started on the 20th of january 1914
Working conditions were primitive and the factory was cold, with male employees wearing scarves and boots while women wore long skirts and bonnets. The foremen lavishly wore bowler hats.
By 1928 the new development was ready to begin production and many employees were transferred from Southampton to Eastleigh.
Crime when it was a brownfield site
Heroin was a problem at the time and pirelli shutting down just made it a bigger problem
Introduction of west quay and construction did reduce crime a little bit and built the shopping centre
Became a spot for drugs and lots of illegal activity
Lots of vandalism to the old site
