What problems exist in Birmingham?
Social and economic
Urban deprivation - Quality of life below what is recognised as acceptable in a particular country
Housing
Sparkbrook - Lots of people loving here don't own their own house instead they rent from the council
Hall Green - More people own their own homes and have homes with more bedrooms. Nearly no people rent from a private landlord or the council
Education
Sparkbrook - Over half of the people don't have qualifications
Hall Green - More people with higher level education
Health
Sparkbrook - more people living here so it is harder to get appointments and the ratio of people to doctors is larger. The houses are closer together so diseases can spread quicker
Hall Green - Less people so can get appointments quicker and there is a smaller ration of people to doctors. They can also afford to have private healthcare
Employment
Sparkbrook - more people are unemployed sue to less people having qualifications
Hall Green - more people with managerial jobs and intermediate occupations
Environmental
Dereliction - Factories closed due to other countries being able to produce the same goods for a cheaper price. Little money put into areas that had factories on so the area becomes run down
Building on brownfield and greenfield sites
Brownfield - the land is not valuable and becomes contaminated by chemicals, asbestos and other pollutants. Clearing the sites can be expensive + Infrastructure in these areas already exist and makes development easier. House prices can go up as old housing is improved
Greenfield - Large sites close to city centres. Cheaper to build on. Wildlife can be disturbed. Easier to build on. Traffic congestion can increase as people live on the outskirts of towns and cities to commute in
Waste disposal - not enough waste plants and increasing population so more waste
Urban sprawl and the growth of commuter settlements
Urban sprawl - the steady growth of urban areas in to the surrounding countryside
Problems - Mass movement into the city --> Traffic --> Pollution. Packed houses --> Nature and wildlife being destroyed. Construction sites --> getting rid of agriculture
Big City Plan
Before - Derelict - Run down - Graffiti - Pollution - basic and dull
After - restore canals - expanding the City core area by over 25% - £2.1 billion to the economy each year - 50,000 new jobs - increasing water ways - over 1.5 million sq metres of now floorspace
