Slumdog Film Study - Scene: Jamal's mother's death in the riot.
Viewing
Did you like the scene or not? Why?
Yes, I like the scene. The scene draws the attention of audience rather effectively with the use of camera angles and diegetic and non-diegetic sounds incorporated to enhance the seriousness of the situation and to keep the audience at their toes.
Were you moved by the stories or challenged?
I was rather challenged when I saw the scene because the scene was not something to be moved by easily, rather it keeps the audience on their edge of their seat with the constant uneasiness build up in the scene.
Did you feel any emotional or psychological responses?
Any psychological or emotional responses I commonly felt through the scene were being constantly worried and being tensed for Jamal and Salim
The trigger of emotional responses were caused by the use of camera effects which had a lot of zoom shots into the face to create a tense feeling and major discomfort to the viewers. Furthermore, this exposed the emotions written on the face to become more vulnerable to the audience to also allow the viewers to feel sympathy towards the two brothers who watched their mum die
There was also diverse use of diegetic and non-diegetic sounds which emphasised the level of chaos present. Jamal was the prominent focus through the use of diegetic sounds, this is evident when the diegetic sounds is a blur for Jamal and suddenly it gets louder. (giving a subtle idea of Jamal coming to a realisation about his situation)
The camera angles have very rapid quick turns as if we, the audience are involved in the whole chaos in the main character's hometown.
Understand the plot and events
The assumed plot was that there was a conflict with the group of people which caused them to attack Jamal's hometown. And so the story progresses by Jamal and Salim escaping their own hometown after their mother's repeated warnings.
Know the main characters and their characterisation
Jamal and Salim's mother is a very observant/attentive, caring, and a sacrificial person.
This is because the Jamal and Salim's mother repeatedly called out her children's name to warn them about the danger. However, she does not care about her position prone to danger.
Also because motherly love.
Jamal is a naïve child
Jamal is shown as a very naïve child, shown through his action of playing in the river with his older brother Salim. Another scene where his mother calls out to him to escape he looks rather confused as he is already being pulled away by his brother for safety.
Salim is aware, rational, risk taker.
While Jamal was more looking around his surrounding to process and sink in what's happening, Salim was already aware that his home was no longer safe. This had pretty solid evident by his lack of hesitation when his mother told him to run away with his little brother, Jamal.
Figure out the overall themes, ideas, and genre.
The overall themes seem to rely on religion?
This was because of the prolonged focus on the supposed God, holding a bow and arrow. Later on, Jamal recalls this part of his childhood to answer the question for the game show in his present life, "In the depictions of the God Rama, he is famously holding what in his right hand."
Some of the film techniques used to amplify this theme are:
extreme close up shot
over the shoulder shot
over the hipshot
tilt shift shot
handheld camera shot (matching their exhausted state)
zoom in/out shot
Appearances of extreme close up shot:
Jamal's face.
Appearances of over the shoulder shots:
Meeting the supposed God Rama
Mother looking over to her children
Appearances of over the hipshot
When Jamal and Salim meet the supposed depiction of God Rama.
Another theme it showed were courage
This was because Jamal and Salim were trying to run away from the riot that was upfolding in their eyes, even witnessing their mother's death. However, it showed they preserved to run away and not run back to their mother (where the danger is present, I guess all throughout the town.)
