Classification of bones and joints
Short Bones
As wide as they are long
For fine movement, stability and support
In sport - weight bearing, shock absorbtion and spreading loads
Carpals, Tarsals
Long Bones
Longer than they are wide
For gross movement and leverage
In sport - generate movement, strength, speed
Flat Bones
Provide a broad flat surface
For protection and provide a large surface for muscle attachment
Cranium, pelvis, rib cage
Irregular Bones
Have a specific shape
Their function therefore are very unique in sport
Some will protect (verterbrae with the spinal corde
Others have of attachment points for muscles (sacrum
Pivot Joint
Allows bones to rotate
In the neck the first two vertebrae, the atlas and the axis, form a pivot joint that connects the cranium to the spine
Hinge Joint
Only backward and forward motion
Knee - Tibia is hinged to the femur
Elbow - Humerus and the Ulna
Ball and Socket Joint
Rounded head of a long bones fits into a cup shaped hole
Condyloid
The ball rests against the end of a bone, rather than inside a socket
This allows a circular motion
The wrist
