B2 - Cells and Control
Mitosis
-
Prophase - Chromosomes condense, and the membrane around the nucleus break down releasing chromosomes into the cytoplasm
-
-
Interphase - Cells Start to Generate more genetic materials, and more sub-cellular structure is produced
-
Mitosis produces 2 genetically identical daughter cells and are done by asexual organisms to reproduce.
-
-
-
Stem cells
-
Meristems in Plants
Meristem produce unspecialised cells, and they have the ability to divide and form into any type of cell.
However, unlike human stem cells, meristem will continue to produce stem cells until the plant dies

The Brain
Structure
Medulla Oblongata
-
for example, breathing, maintaining steady heart rate
-
Cerebrum
-
-
Also is responsible for vision, movement, intelligence, memory, etc
Studying the Brain
-
PET Scanning
PET scanning shows the activity in the brain, using radioactive chemicals to see which parts of the brain are active.
-
-
Eye:
-
-
Lens
Refract light, focusing it onto the retina
-
Long Sightedness
Unable to focus on near objects because the lens in the wrong shape and doesn't bend light enough or the eyeball is too short
Glasses or Contact lenses can be used to correct it, have to be convex lenses
Near Sightedness
Unable to focus on objects relatively far because of lens is the wrong shape and doesn't bend light enough or the eyeball is too short
Glasses or contact lenses can be used to correct it, they have to concave lenses
Colour Blindness means that some people can't see the difference between certain colours, this is commonly caused due to problems in red and green cones
