Denture Stomatitis (Section 2)
Denture Stomatitis :<3:
Cause
- yeast infection caused by a type of fungus c/o
candida
:pen:
small amt lives in our mouth w/o causing any harm. But, sometimes, yeast cn overgrow and cause an infection.
Picture - infection on top part of ur mouth, where denture is in contact.
denture - foreign object if nt cleaned properly + worn all night. it provides a good surface fr bugs to attach --> causing infection.
other factors -
Smoking/diabetes
compromises body's ability to fight off infection
--> causing yeast to overgrow
nt being able to maintain the balance
Combination syndrome? Loose dentures :<3:
wearing from lst 20 yrs, dentures remain same,
but gums & bone changes their shape
gums start to shrink with time.
no teeth to hold them
Fit of the denture can change, & it becomes loose and no longer fits properly
Other reason: due to overgrowth of gum tissue.
happen, when upper denture is opposing natural teeth + back teeth are missing.
Resulting, in overgrowth of tissue in that area.
extra mass on your gums
changed shape of the jaw, loose and eat with it, it comes out/ causes irritation or sore spots in the mouth.
address signs & symptoms :red_flag:
Angular Cheilitis :<3:
(label them)
inflammation of corners of the mouth
predisposes to the condition of mouth -->
folding of skin, due to over closure of jaws,
if dentures, nt worn properly?poorly fitting can cause saliva to accumulate --> moist environment + allow bugs to grow.
wearing dentures on the lower teeth
can help correct this
(address the predisposing factrs + use topical fungal cream)
cud be iron, folate or vit B12 deficiency.
Option 1
- I can give u a numbing gel -- then we organise some blood tests + swab tests (to rule out fungal infection)
tht way, we'll get sure what is causing it n then we cn treat it accordingly.
Option 2
- if u really want, we cn start of with antifungals fr 14 days n see how u go. If there's no improvement we can investigate fr the other causes.
Sometimes, there is dermatitis involved as well --> then give
antifungals + steroids.
when dermatitis gets btr -- then we cn just switch to antifungals.
