Network Characteristics - Coggle Diagram

- - - - If the central device is slow or fails, the whole network will be affected
      - The cost of cabling can be expensive if the network is large
    - - If one device goes down the rest can continue to communicate
      - It’s easy to add additional devices to the network via the central device
  - - - Data potentially has to pass through several devices to reach its destination – slower than STAR
      - If attached devices are defunct, or the cable itself is damaged, the entire network is affected
    - - Each device usually acts as a repeater to “regenerate” and maintain signal strength – fast data transmission
      - Reduced chance of data packet collision using the token to manage bidirectional data transmission (token ring) – only transmits one signal in one direction at any one time
      - Relatively inexpensive in comparison to STAR and MESH topologies (less cable required)
  - - - Tends to be cheaper than other topologies – generally uses less cable
      - Data transmissions are bi-directional (two-way)
      - Attaching a new device is easy and if one devices fails the others are not affected
    - - It’s difficult to identify a faulty device – hard to troubleshoot
      - Transmissions can collide with each other
      - If the “backbone” is damaged it will affect the whole network causing failure or splitting it into two
      - Adding devices can slow it down – not suitable for large networks – increases demand on the backbone cable
  - - - Requires expertise to mange all the physical and/or wireless connections
      - More expensive than other topologies e.g. cable and hardware costs to establish multiple connections between different devices, sometimes wirelessly
      - Installation and configuration can be complex and time consuming
    - - Robust - if one connection is broken there are several other routes to use to transmit data
      - The ability for private communications between devices directly increases the security of data transfer
      - Faults are easier to identify than in other topologies
