6: kansas nebraska act of bleeding kansas 1854 to 1859
stephen douglas decided that nebraska should be divided into two
people were angry about the new people going there
people flooded the state to vote for slave.non slave

7: dred scott v sandford 1857
dred scott was an enslaved man who moved to illinois from virginia and sued for freedom
the court said that he was a piece of property so he could not sue
john brown and harpers ferry 1859
john brown wanted to raid an armory
wanted to arm a lot of enslaved people
people were put in jail, killed and they failed the raid
the event got a lot of national attention
the south got nervous of more inserections
got ready to fight
9: the election of abraham lincoln
he did not do it for the people, he did it for the union and the country, was not completely flawed, just a little
he won even though he the south did not put his name on a lot of ballots
they twisted a lot of the rights and said they they could enslave people legally
they put an abolitionist in the white house

north thought south was bad
spend money on roads and increase economy
south thought south was bad
did not need roads and wanted to spend money on other stuff

on february of 1861 jefferson davis is chosen as the president of the confederate states of america
after Ft. sumter in april 1861 president abraham lincoln called 75000 volunteers and declared the american civil war
first major battle of the civil war was the battle of the first manassas also known as bull run july 21, 1861
the purpose of the war was to bring the states together, that's what lincoln wanted but then two men told him to make it about emancipation
emancipation is the act of freeing
confederates surrender
general robert e lee surrendered on behalf of the confederacy at appomattox virginia on april 9 1865
about 2.75 million people fought in the war
more than 620000 men died in the war, 60% of these were due to disease
