Acute otitis media
Pathophysiology
Otitis media starts as an inflammatory process following a viral upper respiratory tract infection involving mucosa of the nose, nasopharynx, middle ear mucosa and Eustachain tubes. The infective organism cause swelling of the Eustachain tube.
Definition
Acute otitis media refers to the middle ear infection or inflammation.
Signs and symptoms
Ear pain
Ostalgia.
Children may pull affected ear or may pull hairs.
Otorrhea.
There maybe a discharge or drainage from the ear.
Irritability
Fever.
Children with acute otitis media may have elevated body temperature.
Young adults may experience headache
Problem
Ear pain
Expected outcome
The patientwill indicate nonappearance of agony.
Nursing diagnosis
Acute pain related to inflammation of the ear.
Nursing interventions
Position the patient in a high bowlers position, or have patient to lie on unaffected ear, using pillows for support.
Apply warming pads or warm hot water bottle
Assess hearing ability of the infant more often.
Evaluation
The Goal is met as evidenced by the patient showing non appearance of pain.
