Disorder in the Republic
Cicero was one of the many Romans who tried to stop the chaos in Rome. He was a philosopher and a public speaker.
Cicero gave speeches, with them he expected for the government to change, but the government did not change. Meanwhile several generals were working to take over the goverment.
Politicians and generals went to war to increase their power even as political order broke down in Rome.
The most powerful of the generals was Julius Caesar, he had powerful friends, he made an alliance with Pompey and Crassus, they ruled Rome.
The end of the Republic
After some disagreements and fights against Marc Anthony, Octavian became Rome's sole ruler.
When Rome became an empire, it already controlled most of Mediterranean world. Augustus and the emperors who followed him further expanded the empire.
After Caesar's assassination, Marc Anthony, who was Caesar's former assistant, and his adopted son Agust, took control of Roman politics.
Rome's accomplishments
Latin developed into many different languages, they were called Romance langues. They include French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Romanian.
Roman law inspired a system called civil law, it is a legal system based on a written code of laws.
Roman scientist wanted results that could benefit their society. The Romans practical use of science also can be seen in their engineering.
