Production Elements for
Intended Impact
Lighting
Minimal lighting - Dark setting will communicate
the play is set late at night, as well as compliment
the dark themes and subject matter of the play.
Main source of light will be in front of the actor
directly shining on their face - simulate laptop screen
Adds onto the setting of the play, since
the play is completely set in a chatroom.
Makes the audience feel uneasy,
making them more emotionally linked with
the characters and the plot.
Sound
Sound effects are taken from
chatroom software, to reinforce
the fact that the play is set on the Internet.
Music is used to create a sense of comfort,
which will be taken away when the conversation
takes a darker turn to emphasize unease and darkness
Ambiance is quiet, with very few sounds.
It is often silent, to create awkwardness,
tension, and discomfort in the audience as
the plot gets darker and more grim.
Costume
Costumes will be modern,
but also suiting characterisation.
William: Rich clothes
Eva: Dark, black clothes
Emily: Bright, vibrant dress
Jack: Plain t-shirt, cap, comfortable
casual clothing.
Jim: Dark but simple outfit,
black t-shirt, messy.
Set + Props
The play could be set on an empty stage
with a dark black/navy blue background.
This would be an abstract setting which
represents the online chatroom, rather
than physical interaction.
Set will be minimalistic, since
the main focus is on the characters
and plot.
Props should reveal character,
should not be placed without reason.
William can have rich accessories,
food to show bullying is "entertainment"
Eva should have chewing gum,
since gum is often considered rude
and Eva is apathetic to etiquette and society.
Emily: Sketch pens,
compliment her vibrant personality
and show her as somewhat superficial
and naive.
Jack should have a phone to show he
is somewhat oblivious to surroundings,
and always needs some sort of stimulation.
Jim should have a soft ball.
He uses it as a stress ball to show anxiety.
The play could also have
a textual chat projected
onto the background,
and with every dialogue
the projection is updated with
a text message containing
the same dialogue.
