Food Tests
Benedict's Test (for sugars)
Prepare 5cm² of food sample in a test tube
Prepare a water bath at 75°C
Add 10 drops of Benedict's solution (using a pipette)
Place the test tube into the bath using a test tube holder and leave it in there for 5 minutes
If reducing sugar is present, solution will change from blue to either green, yellow or brick-red
Sudan III Test (for lipids)
Prepare 5cm² of food sample in a test tube
Add 3 drops of Sudan III stain solution to the test tube with a pipette and gently shake
If the solution contains lipids, the mixture will separate out into two layers: top layer will be bright red. If no lipids are present, this layer won't form
Ethanol Test (for lipids)
Prepare 5cm² of food sample
Add a few drops of ethanol to the sample using a pipette
Solution poured into another test tube containing water. If lipids are present, a cloudy liquid or emulsion will form
Biuret Test (for proteins)
Prepare 2cm² of food sample in a test tube
Add 2cm² of Biuret solution and gently shake to mix the contents
If the solution contains protein, it will change from blue to purple
Iodine Solution (for starch)
Prepare 5cm² of food sample in test tube
Add a few drops of iodine solution (with a pipette) and gently shake the contents. If the sample contains starch, colour will change from browny-orange to black or blue-black
