Phobias Characteristics.
What are Phobias?
A phobia is an overwhelming and debilitating fear of an object, place, situation, feeling or animal. Phobias are more pronounced than fears. They develop when a person has an exaggerated or unrealistic sense of danger about a situation or object.
Certain mild fears of a spider for example are quite normal amongst some cultures, however if someone is to be clinically diagnosed with a phobia, they must meet the following criteria:
• The sufferer would experience an immediate panic attack or anxiety when faced with their fear stimulus.
-
• There must be a marked and persistent fear out of all proportion to the actual danger posed by the situation.
