used his trip to
architects to return and work in Mali

gathered a large collection of books
Timbuktu became centre of learning

1400, the empire began to lose control along the edges of its borders
1500 nearby Songahi Empire rose to power
1610 last Mansa of Mali, Mahmud IV died
believed Mansa's 3 sons fought over the kingdom
Kingdom finally collapsed in 1670
