Process oficial the formation oficial ocean waves anda ocean currents:
Parts of a wave:
Wave Crest
Fetch
Wave Period
Wave Frequency
Wave Length
Wave Height
Wave Trough
Ocean Waves:
Wave: The repeating and periodic disturbance that travels through a medium (e.g. water) from one location to another location.
Factors that produce ocean waves:
There are three factors:
Wind velocity
Fetch
Duration
Information about Tsunamis:
Tsunamis are giant waves caused by earthquakes or volcanic eruptions under the sea.
The waves travel inland, they build up to higher and higher heights as the depth of the ocean decreases. The speed of tsunami waves depends on ocean depth rather than the distance from the source of the wave.
Tsunami waves may travel as fast as jet planes over deep waters, only slowing down when reaching shallow waters.
An underwater earthquake, a volcano eruption or a landslide mostly causes a tsunami.
Only on very few occasions a tsunami is caused by a giant meteor in the ocean
Coriolis Effect:
Describes the pattern of deflection taken by objects not firmly connected to the ground as they travel long distances around the Earth.
Is an apparent force, relative to the earth's surface, that causes deflection of moving objects to the right in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the Southern Hemisphere due to the earth's rotation.
Ocean currents produced by temperature and density
Is an apparent force, relative to the earth's surface, that causes deflection of moving objects to the right in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the Southern Hemisphere due to the earth's rotation.
Differences in water masses due to temperature (thermo) and salinity (haline) variations via a process known as thermohaline circulation. These currents move water masses through the deep ocean—taking nutrients, oxygen, and heat with them.
