- - - - The book is excellent at using colors and scenery to build the story. A good example of this is when the book describes the day of 9/11 before the planes hit. It describes in detail the unseasonably cool weather for that day, and regular people going to work. Even though I knew exactly what would happen that day, the book was able to build suspense by being so descriptive.
  - - - The main characters in the book are Welles Crowther, Jeff Crowther, and Allison Crowther, along with survivors like Ling Young, and people who knew Welles. Because it is a book, it has much more room to work with than a movie to build characters and to have additional characters. Because of this, the book is able to help me understand the relationships of these characters, and get a feel of who they really are.
  - - - The main symbol that the book uses is the red bandanna. In fact, the only thing featured on the book cover is a red bandanna pattern. The bandanna is chosen for obvious reasons and not so obvious ones. The most obvious reason is that Welles Crowther always carried, and was recognized by his red bandanna. The other reason is that the bandanna symbolizes anonymity. Because his face was covered, no one knew who he was, showing that he acted the way that he did simply because it was the right thing to do.
  - - - The Man in the Red Bandanna is written in a style similar to fiction. It builds characters as if they are fiction. The perspective of the book is 3rd person omniscient, a style few non-fiction books are told in. Because of this, reading The Man in the Red Bandanna didn't feel like reading a non-fiction book.
  - - - The main message of the book is to help others. It emphasizes the absurd amount of heroism that Welles Crowther had in that he did everything he possibly could to save as many people as possible at the cost of his own life. He could have easily saved a few people and walk out alive a hero, but the fact that he went back shows that he didn't care about glory.
- - - - The opening scene uses music switching between major and minor chords to both create an ominous and mysterious feeling, but also a warm feeling. The opening scene also places the red bandanna everywhere to show its importance. The movie shows childhood reenactments in black and white to create a "long ago" feeling. The movie uses an image with the twin towers in the background to transition to the events of 9/11. The images of the 9/11 attacks use darker colors because the event itself could be described as dark.
  - - - The main characters in the movie are Welles's parents and Ling Young. Each of these characters have a different purpose in telling the story of Welles Crowther. His parents are for telling their pride and grief from loosing him. Ling is for the survivors perspective of Crowther. Other characters, such as Crowther's team mates are for establishing Crowther's character as a good and selfless person who always works hard.
  - - - The red bandanna is the primary symbol of the movie because it was the primary feature of Welles Crowther when he saved people. Crowther's sports jerseys are also a symbol. They help highlight his selflessness and his dedication to the team as a whole. The movie covers the topic of Crowther's sports career to establish that he wasn't self oriented, explaining why he helped so many people at the cost of his life.
  - - - The movie explains the perspectives of Welles Crowther from his mother, father, Ling Young, and his former team mates. They are all overwhelmingly positive. There are tones of both extreme grief and pride. Ling had a tone of thankfulness,. His team mates and friends all had tones of pride for knowing him, and were not surprised by Welles's actions because they knew his good character.
  - - - The main message of the movie is to do what you can with your life to improve the lives of others. It first starts to convey this message at the very beginning when it says, "What would you do with the last hour of your life?" Welles Crowther decided to be a hero in a selfless act in his last hour, which the movie makes a big deal of. As a result, the audience has a feeling of wanting to do something important, similar to Welles Crowther.
