Vladimir Lenin
Childhood
-
Born in Simbirsk, Russia, on April 10, 1870
-
As a young man he began to develop radical (extreme) political views in disagreement with the existing Russian form of government
-
At the time, Russia was ruled by Tsars, emperors who inherited their positions
It is likely that his shift to radical views was fueled by the execution by hanging of his older brother Alexander in 1887 for plotting to kill the Tsar
-
Life
He continued his studies away from the university, obtaining a law degree in 1891
Lenin moved to Petrograd, the imperial capital in 1893
He was an admirer of Marx, who believed in an international revolution (overthrow of the government) by the proletariat, who would lead the way to a new system of power.
Marx argued that property would be owned communally (as a group) and work would be distributed equally in this new system
-
Lenin graduated from secondary school with high honors but was later expelled from Kazan University for participating in a political demonstration
