Vladimir Lenin - Stela
Early life/life before revolution
Born in Simbirsk, Russia, on
April 10, 1870
Lenin grew up in fairly privileged conditions due to his father's occupation (high official in the education system) and social position
Although he didn't come from a struggling working class background, he later on went to defend the workers' rights and fight for revolution
As a young man, Lenin began to develop radical political views, and he disagreed with the Russian form of government
Lenin's views were probably influenced by his brother's execution in 1887 for plotting against the Tsar
Lenin graduated and enrolled at Kazan University. There, he was expelled for participating in a political demonstration.
However, he still obtained a degree in law in 1891
Lenin moved to Petrograd in 1893.
By this point, Lenin already was an admirer of Karl Marx and was on the way of becoming a Marxist revolutionary.
In 1897 Lenin was arrested and spent some months in jail. He was then sentenced to 3 years of exile in Siberia.
He was joined by Nadezhda Konstantinovna Krupskaya, who was also a Marxist. The two got married in 1898
After leaving Siberia in 1900, Lenin moved to Europe, where he spent most of the following 17 years.
There, he wrote, debated and organized
with other European intellectuals.
As many European Marxists began to discuss the possibility of a great war among European nations, socialists condemned it and pledged not to support the nations.
Lenin urged active opposition to any European war effort and a transformation of any war into a worker's revolution
When the war began, Lenin was in Switzerland and began drafting a book about state government called "The State and
Revolution"
In 1916, he wrote "Imperialism: The Highest Stage of Capitalism"
As the war continued, Lenin grew depressed, and he wrote to a friend saying that he thought he would not live to see a revolution. However, only a month later, the Tsar was overthrown, marking the beginning of the 1917 Russian Revolution.
Political beliefs & participation
Heavily influenced by Karl Marx
Lenin was responsible for putting Marx's (and Engel's) theories into practice
Lenin is considered as one of the founders of Communism along with Marx.
Marxism-Leninism
Leninism had a strong belief that there had to be a dictatorship of the proletariat.
However, this dictatorship was not exercised by the workers but by the leaders of the Communist Party.
To Lenin, the working class wouldn't achieve proper revolutionary/class consciousness on its own, meaning that there was a need for a communist "elite"
The addition of Lenin's own beliefs lead to the adoption of autocratic aspects into Communist Russia.
He formed the first communist state in the world (Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic - 1917)
