"Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development"
97 countries signed the agreement on port state measures the first binding international agreement on illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing
Oceans are our planet’s life support and regulate the global climate system. Current efforts to protect key marine environments and small-scale fisheries, and to invest in ocean science are not but meeting the urgent need to safeguard this vast, yet fragile, resource. The reduction in human activity due to COVID-19 is a chance for oceans to recuperate.
How bad is it?
The great challenges of overfishing, climate change, pollution and habitat loss have taken a terrible toll, jeopardising vital fish stocks and the lives and livelihoods of the hundreds of millions who depend on them.
Nonpoint source pollution can make river and ocean water unsafe for humans and wildlife. In some areas, this pollution is so bad that it causes beaches to be closed after rainstorms. More than one-third of the shellfish-growing waters of the United States are adversely affected by coastal pollution.
What is or can be done?
-
Properly dispose of chemical cleaners, oils, and non-biodegradable items to keep them from ending up down the drain.
Maintain your car so it doesn’t leak oil, antifreeze, or coolant.
If you have a yard, consider landscaping that reduces runoff and avoid applying pesticides and herbicides
