Totalitarianism & WWII
Aspects of Totalitarianism
Aspects of Fascism
How Civilians were affected by WWII
The Holocaust
Propaganda and censorship: This was seen when totalitarian leaders presented themselves as Gods or father like figures. It was also seen in order to evoke fear towards certain races. It was also seen in Japan to promote militarism.
Indoctrination: was seen when Russians were put in communities to spread the culture. Was also seen in Germany where Hitler tried training an army for world domination and seen in japan where mitarlism was drilled in people's heads as well as the nationalist ideas.
Government control of the economy: This could be seen in the Soviet Union when the government caused a forced famine on Ukraine. This was also seen in Germany when many projects were made so that there would be more employment. This was also seen in the 5 year plan of Stalin. This was also seen in Japan where citizens were required to make certain quotas of crops and products.
Police terror: was used to stay in power, it was seen in Soviet Union where person was imprisoned for clapping less, in Germany it was seen when the secret police attacked anyone who opposed Hitler or were Jewish. Was seen in Japan to suppress political uprisings.
Religious and ethnic persecution: This could be seen in the Soviet Union when anyone who was considered a enemy of the farmers. Pretty much, anyone who did not identify themself as communist was persecuted. This was also seen in Germany, Hitler hated Jews and this was one of the causes of the Holocaust.
Militarism: this was seen in mass proportions in Japan. Militarism was a huge part and even kids of schools were convinced that the military was to be glorified. They used propaganda and indoctrination to spread this message.
Racism: This was seen in Germany where they believed that the Jews were to blame for all of Germany's problems.
No individualism: This was seen in Japan when people were forced to do jobs and practice a religion.
Having 1 person maintain all the power: examples include Stalin, Hitler, and Hirohito.
Nationalist: This was seen in Japan where the government convinced the people that they were descendents of Gods and had to all follow their superiors. It was also seen when they convinced the Japanese people that they should rule the rest of Asia.
Conflict brings strength: was seen through militarism.
Forced to work jobs: the mother and daughter were forced to work at the train stations and other public places that could put their lives in danger.
Put in dangerous situations: families were evicted from their homes and were caught in crossfire where they would suffer while the soldiers continued to be greedy and selfish.
Tried to retaliate: workers at the train station put up posters that discouraged the Germans from hurting people. This was a form of retaliating against the violence and negativity the Germans imposed on the people.
Were firebombed and had their homes destroyed: large parts of cities were destroyed by the firebombs which caused buildings and homes to catch on fire and peopl e to be killed from suffocating,
Had large parts of their culture lost: this was seen when the Japanese captured many Korean people who were not able to practice their religion, traditions, or other aspects of their culture. They were forced to practice their culture secretly which meant that they could lose large parts of their culture.
Was an event that targeted Jewish Germans, was caused by racial prejudices and the racism involved with the Fascist nation of Germany.
Isolated them and tried to kill them off: Jewish Germans were kept from going out to public places(due to the Nuremberg Laws). Jews were not allowed to go to parks, theatres, or other public places. This kept them from maintaining relationships with other Germans. They were also required to wear the Star of David on their clothes to help identify them in public.
Some Jews along with other Europeans fought with resistance: This was seen in examples of hiding Jews in homes to avoid being captured. This also included running away from nations, physically fighting, listening to swing music, and continuing to practice the Jewish culture.
