France- French Humanists interested in Luther’s work, and left the Church to become the Huguenots. There were wars between them and the Catholics for 4 decades.

He believed that:

  1. following the rituals of the Church was not enough to get into heaven
  2. Individuals should seek personal religious understanding
  3. Individuals should not pay the church to receive forgiveness for their sins
    People supported these ideas because they promoted individualism and expressed Humanist ideas.
    He wrote his famous “95 Theses” that were 95 ideas to change the church and nailed it to the door of the church.
    The pope declared that most of them were heresy and they expelled him from the Roman Catholic Church.
    As a protest, he started the Protestant church and gained a great following.
